Community Update – August 20189th August, 2018
This week (August 6-12) is National Homelessness Week.
HammondCare is building a residential aged care home for homeless people or those at risk of homelessness in inner city Darlinghurst. The home will provide 42 beds in private rooms for both men and women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. It will incorporate specialist services for people with high care needs, and be operational in 2019.
Construction activities and current site works
Site remediation and excavation works continue on the site at 118A Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst. The main excavation works will near completion at the end of this month.
Thanks for everyone’s patience during the earthworks. Trucks entering the site will reduce significantly once the earthworks are complete at the end of August.
The building structure will commence in September following completion of excavation works. The crane will be installed onsite at this time. It is expected construction will finish on-time by mid 2019.
The site has been improved with the addition of the hoardings along Darlinghurst Road and Victoria Street, which include photographs and some history of the site. The pictures below show current works onsite and the historical hoardings.
St Johns engaged the services of a qualified stone mason on sandstone repair and restoration work on both the northern and southern sides of the church. This work was required as part of the Conservation Management Plan, a condition of the DA. It has provided a much needed spruce up to some areas of the church.
A women’s only floor will be considered as part of the home, to help cater for the significant rise in the number of older homeless women. Older women are the fastest growing group of homeless people in Australia and this is particularly an issue in Sydney. A separate floor for women has been suggested by various service providers, and is an idea that is being considered.
