The accident left Jim with a brain injury that cost him his job. Jim’s marriage crumbled under the financial strain and he lost his family.
Because of his age and injuries, Jim couldn’t find another job, his savings ran out, and after a lifetime of hard work, he found himself homeless.
Desperately lonely and struggling with crippling depression, Jim was haunted by the shame of his situation.
"I felt so ashamed. I couldn't bear to ask for help. I couldn't even look at myself."
Whether because of the brain injury, his depression or the exposure of living homeless, Jim can no longer keep track of the time of day. He often misses opportunities to eat and shower because he can't remember when or where to go.
His poor personal hygiene has led to serious infections in open wounds that he has no way to keep clean or dressed.
The streets are no place for a frail older man. Jim urgently needs medical care and a safe, warm place to sleep. But above all, he longs for the chance to regain his dignity, so he can hold his head up again.
“I dream of having a home again - of being able to hold my head up and have people look me in the eye and talk to me again.”
With your support we can open a safe and permanent home for the elderly who are homeless and have complex healthcare needs, and provide vulnerable people the opportunity to regain their dignity. Help us pave the way to the completion of HammondCare Darlinghurst - please donate here.
